Cricut Explore 5 vs Silhouette Cameo 5 Alpha (2026)

The short answer

Phone app, cards with scoring? Explore 5

Long vinyl runs from any brand? Cameo 5 Alpha

Two 12 in cutters for vinyl, iron-on and paper. The Explore 5 comes with a Scoring Tool and marker and runs Design Space on phones, tablets and computers. The Cameo 5 Alpha cuts up to 16 ft without a mat on any lined material and uses 4-point registration for Print & Cut, but Silhouette lists only Windows and Mac for its software.

Two rows get a check: matless cutting goes to the Cameo 5 Alpha, device support to the Explore 5. Speed, thickness and tools are measured differently by the two makers.

A green check marks the clearly better spec for most people, no check means a tie, a tiny gap or a spec the makers measure differently, and every figure comes from Cricut and Silhouette America’s own product pages, not from Amazon.

Spec notes
  • Speed and thickness aren’t checked across brands: Cricut lists inches per second and what a named blade cuts; Silhouette lists mm per second and the thickest material the machine takes.
  • Tool counts are the maker’s own: Cricut counts compatible tool types; Silhouette lists two tool holders instead.
Where the sources disagree
  • Cricut Explore 5 size and weight: Cricut’s Explore 5 product page doesn’t list them, so we use the comparison chart (19.8 x 7.5 x 4.7 in, 10 lb). The chart gives the same figures for the Maker 5, whose own product page says 10.9 lb.
  • Cricut Explore 5 tools: the same product page says it “works with six tools” in one place and “works with 5 tools” in another.
  • Cricut Explore 5 devices: Cricut’s comparison chart lists “iOS, Mac, Windows, Google” for the Explore 5 and “Android” for its other machines, while the product page says only “mobile or desktop device.” We use the product page wording.
  • Silhouette Cameo 5 Alpha weight: the product page says 11.5 lb; Silhouette’s user’s manual says the Alpha alone weighs about 5 kg (about 11 lb) and the Alpha Plus about 5.5 kg (about 12.1 lb; product page: 12.7 lb). We use the product page figures. The gap between the two models is about 1.1 to 1.2 lb either way, and the check marks don’t change.
  • Silhouette Cameo 5 Alpha speed: the page intro says “a maximum speed of 400 mm/s,” but the spec table lists 300 mm/s for cutting and 400 mm/s for sketching. We use 300 mm/s for cutting.
  • The software and devices check mark holds under both Cricut sources: the chart’s “iOS, Mac, Windows, Google” and the product page’s “mobile or desktop device” both include phones or tablets, and Silhouette lists only Windows and macOS.
